With sunlight cleaving the velvet shadows, lush grass and a river running through it, Blinkwater Camping and Cottages is a model of glorious simplicity. But hey, who needs fancy accoutrements in paradise?
Occupying 25 ha of melodramatic ruggedness in the Cederberg Mountains – 10 km from Citrusdal on the R303 – the 14 campsite plots and two cottages are perfectly private. Adding dollops of buzz are a boma, amphitheatre and 3-metre deep pool.
In addition to modern bathrooms and a homey living area with DStv, the two-bedroom cottages have all necessities to make the living easy. Meanwhile, those bedding down in the campsite have the pleasure of a squeaky clean ablution block with spacious full bathrooms.
Big on special occasions, Wian and Mariaan van der Vyfer will fortify your special event at Blinkwater with slick catering services. Take your pick between potjiekos, spit braai, steak braai or the real-deal boerebraai.
Snout around the mountainous area where rocks and vegetation jostle for position, splash in the Boontjies river and pump adrenaline with zip-sliding or rock climbing. Should mellow pursuits be your poison, there are those too: angling, hiking or rock art viewing.
And if you can bear to leave, Citrusdal has several good eateries, plus a splendid wine selection awaits at Tierhoek, high up in the picturesque Piekenierskloof peaks.
