If the measure of a good guesthouse is décor, then Absolute Castillo in Riebeek-Kasteel should get six stars. Its diverse colour pallet provides a positively vivacious backdrop for winding down.
This is the new breed of country lodge – city living brought to the hills. The house is full of quirky but stylish reworks of a traditional country house and boasts more art adorning the walls and public spaces than many a gallery.
With baths large enough for two and beds big enough (and comfy enough) for four, Absolute Castillo hasn’t traded substance for style. The four en-suite rooms are cloaked in glamour and all the little delightful extras are there: a desk, Wi-Fi, tea/coffee maker and toiletries.
But it’s the little touches by hosts Ria and Andries Greyling – the bright garden, a huge outdoor swimming pool and a welcoming glass of vino – that add to the appeal of blissing out here.
To stay out of mischief, the lodge is situated a stroll away from swell restaurants and fabulous shops. Alternatively, strolling the pretty streets is rather therapeutic or head out to Kasteelberg for some serious climbing cardio.
