La Parilla in Riebeek-Kasteel

If your guilty pleasure is spicy food, La Parilla in Riebeek-Kasteel won’t let you down in both their classic and sometimes not-so-classic Latin-American cuisine. It’s also a lively space.

For early birds, a breakfast plate of Huevos Rancheros is stodgily delicious with three grinning fried eggs and avocado sitting in a rockpool of tomato and red pepper sauce alongside a cheesy tortilla sprinkled with coriander.

Goat Cheese Bon Bons for starters aren’t strictly Latin-American, but what the heck, they’re delightful, coming as they do with ruby-red beetroot carpaccio and a zesty citrus dressing. Jalapeno aioli, which accompanies the Tomato and Chorizo Risotto Balls, packs quite a punch, but is tapered well by the bed of mashed peas.

Onwards to mains. The Brazilian fish stew arrives with a flourish. Yellow tail, prawns and mussels in a dreamy tomato-based coconut cream sits on a bed of basmati rice. But the Steak Fajita prevails with generous steak strips, velvety fried sweet peppers and onions – all held together with lavish cheddar cheese, sour cream and guacamole. Plato De Amigos is a hake taco joy with pungent quesadilla, cheesy nachos, crisp calamari tentacles and sultry crumbed mushrooms.

If ever there was a happy ending, Churros is it. These authentic Spanish doughnuts are draped in a warm chocolate sauce. Delish!
