There’s a big old world out there, so strap on those boots and live life on Riebeek Valley trails.
Conquer historically significant Kasteelberg by tackling either the Carl Thunberg or Pieter Cruythoff route. The routes may be brief (between 2–3 hours), but the inclines are sufficiently challenging to test your mettle.
Carl Thunberg Route
Get going at Pulpit Rock Winery, just north of Riebeek West on the R311. Weave between rows of grapevines and as you ascend, you’ll see the jeep track, located just right of a gully. Follow this trail until it narrows. A cairn marks the next leg of your ascent and then the first notable landmark will be a wild olive tree.
Continue your climb around rocky outcrops. Although the final stretch to the summit is unmarked, it’s easy to navigate. At the top, marvel at the sight of Table Mountain to the southwest and the distant Piketberg and Cederberg ranges to the north.
Pieter Cruythoff Route
Obtain permission from Meerhof Farm before doing this hike. Starting at a stile near the memorial on Bothmanskloof Pass, clear markings make the trail simple to follow. At the summit, you’ll be greeted with a sweeping vista of Riebeek Valley. The climb is steep indeed, but the stunning backdrop makes the PT worthwhile. Experienced ramblers can continue on into the Kasteelberg Nature Reserve. Here, paths are unmarked, offering a more rugged experience.
Permits: Riebeek Valley Tourism office. Be prepared for varying weather conditions, especially when the south-easter is pumping.
