Katkop Resort

Big rewards always await when ditching the crowds and choosing the road less travelled. In this case, a nature reserve gem near Graafwater, called Katkop Resort.

Offering an invigorating blend of open spaces and relaxation, the 1 200-ha farm crawls with hiking trails and 4×4 routes. Add to this a massive swimming pool, plus razzle-dazzle views of the Heerenlogement mountain and you’re set for a blast.

There are 16 well-furnished and –equipped pet-friendly cottages with solar-powered lights: nine are open plan, two have 2 bedrooms and there’s a one-bedroom luxurious house. Budget option Jakkalsdraai is a collection of four linked cottages – a good choice for a close-knit group. And host Hettie van Zyl makes doubly sure that all is hunky-dory.

In August and September’s flower-strewn landscape, prolific birdlife is the cherry on top. It’s truly a privilege to see breeding pairs of the sensational Verreaux’s eagle, as well as our national bird, the Blue Crane. You’ll also connect with small game on your rambles.

Although there is cell phone reception, in an ever-connected world, it’s just good to spend time in a place that at least feels remote enough to go off-grid. The stillness will nourish you in all the ways you need.
