Shackleton Brewing Company’s industry-leading beers are sure to pound the hearts of beer aficionados. Their vibey taproom in Paarden Eiland has a selection of five beers for sampling. But even more impressive is the brewhouse imported from the UK.
Top-selling craft draught Kölsch is crisp, clean and made for easy drinking – brewed similarly to the authentic method from Cologne, Germany. Brilliant clear to light gold in appearance, it has a subdued malt aroma and flavour profile for a pleasantly well-attenuated and refreshing finish. This allows the spicy hops and yeast to shine.
With a low to medium bitterness, Kölsch is a good match for dishes that won’t overpower its delicate flavours. Think light salads, fish, crustacean dishes, calamari, fruit-based desserts, nutty cheeses and Bratwurst.
Highly sessionable, the Shackleton Golden Ale has a balanced bitterness thanks to its low malt character. Clear with a gold to light orange colour, it sports a wheat and grain aroma with a noticeable citrus hop presence.
Try it with rich proteins such as barbecued and grilled meats. The beer’s subtle sweetness complements the char and spices of the meat, while the carbonation cuts through the fattiness. It’s also sufficiently versatile to pair with salads and other light dishes.
