Just a tad over a year ago, De Werf restaurant near Philadelphia opened its imposing barn doors with a bang for custom. The grounds – neat as a pin – are inviting, the deli offerings are farm-fresh, the restaurant buzzes cheerfully … and best of all, canines are welcome too.
The Shakshuka for breakfast punches well above its weight with a flavourful roasted red bell pepper and chickpea sauce. Olives add a briny sharpness, while tangy feta cheese crumbles on top provide contrast. Meanwhile, poached eggs nestle into the sauce and the flatbread does a good job of absorbing every last drop of sauce.
For an indulgent toastie, the Philly Steak is it! Thinly sliced steak strips cooked to juicy perfection shine. Sweet milk cheese adds luscious richness, while caramelised onions bring a hint of sweetness. A bold horseradish mayo makes it all pop.
Cape Malay Bunny Chow for mains beats you into submission. It’s an explosion of flavours and textures. Tender, slow-cooked lamb soaks up the deep spices, infusing the soft milk bread holding the hearty filling. Coriander mint raita and sambals add a piquant crunch.
End the meal with some sophistication: a decadently moist Chocolate Beetroot cake which surprises with its bittersweet and fruity undertones. Divine!
