On 21 March, Porterville will blush. Not from sunburn or scandal, but from pomegranates—ripe and ruby-red—as Houdconstant Farm throws open its gates for the second annual Pomegranate Festival. Entry is free, spirits are high and the fruit of the moment will be ready for its close-up.
Last year’s inaugural festival proved that the pomegranate is no quiet wallflower. It drew a lively crowd, sparked conversation, and confirmed what local growers already knew: all the varieties of this ancient fruit have modern swagger. This year promises more of the same, with extra polish.
Expect tastings that range from sharp to dangerously moreish, plus a generous spread of stalls showcasing all things pomegranate. From juices and preserves to clever culinary twists, the fruit’s versatility will be on full display. Informative and unpretentious workshops also promise to be a drawcard.
Beyond the eating and drinking, the festival leans gently into the pomegranate’s other talents. Skincare ranges infused with the fruit’s antioxidant riches will be on offer. In addition, guests can stock up on locally grown fresh fruit and veg at the farmer’s market.
Set against Houdconstant’s pastoral calm, the day is designed to be unhurried and convivial. Think wandering rather than rushing, chatting rather than scrolling. Bring friends, family, a healthy appetite and perhaps a tote bag or two.
