There’s far more to seabird rescue than someone heroically scooping a bird into a box. At SANCCOB, the reality is a fascinating mix of veterinary care, rehabilitation, conservation and many very determined feathers.
The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds is a non-profit seabird rehabilitation centre which protects South Africa’s coastal birds, particularly threatened species. Since 1968, it’s treated more than 83 000 sick, injured, oiled or orphaned seabirds.
A Behind the Scenes Tour offers a glimpse into the work that happens beyond the centre’s public areas. The 45-minute experience includes seeing chick-rearing in the nursery, touring selected areas of the rehab centre, gaining insight into the care of rescued birds and witness how they’re prepped for eventual release back into the wild.
You’ll also learn how SANCCOB responds to major oil spills, conducts conservation research and uses environmental education to turn visitors into seabird champions.
Tours are by prior arrangement for a maximum of 10 people. This certainly is a worthwhile experience for groups, families and anyone curious about what it takes to give seabirds a second chance.
