In the unlikeliest of locations, Fryer’s Cove Winery sits prettily on the rugged Doringbay harbour, 16 minutes from Ebenhaeser and about 260 km from Melkbos on the R362. With the ocean and the wind flavouring the vine leaves with salt flakes, its wines have the distinct minerality that bears testimony to its Atlantic Ocean neighbour. They’re thus also appropriately branded ‘forged of the earth, tempered by the sea’.
Having already made their way onto the must-have list of wine connoisseurs, the range consists of the five-star Bamboes Bay Sauvignon Blanc, Bamboes Bay Pinot Noir and Doringbay Sauvignon Blanc. These wines can be tasted and enjoyed at what’s probably the only ocean-level wine cellar and tasting locale in the world – in an old crayfish factory with spectacular views.
Right next door is The Jetty Restaurant which has a value-for-money offering which includes calamari, snoek, hake, pork belly, steaks, chicken, burgers, pizzas, salads and a selection of platters. The kids can play among the rocks and in a maritime sandpit while mom and dad sip wine in the salty air to the cries of the seagulls. Altogether a delightful experience.
The Fryer’s Cove Tasting Room is open to the public Monday to Friday from 08h00 – 17h00 and Saturdays from 10h00 – 17h00. For more information phone 027 2151092.
