How a Bloubergsands entrepreneur turned a passion for Land Rovers into two successful brands.
From a Paarden Eiland workshop that began with just seven Land Rovers on the floor, Louis Smit has built two respected automotive brands: 7Landies and Defenders Worldwide. Together, they represent a blend of engineering obsession, craftsmanship and old-fashioned petrolhead passion.
Louis’ story begins with a lifelong fascination for the Land Rover brand. Long before bespoke restorations and international exports entered the picture, he was immersed with all things Land Rover, learning the quirks and complexities of vehicles designed to survive rugged trails, mountain passes and mechanical abuse.
In 2009, he took the leap and founded 7Landies. There was no grand corporate strategy, but simply a vision to create a workshop where Land Rover owners could feel understood.
That approach struck a chord. Land Rover owners are a particular tribe. They swap breakdown stories with pride, argue passionately about engine conversions and treat dusty off-road scars as badges of honour. Louis recognised that what these drivers wanted wasn’t simply a service centre, but a trusted home for their vehicles.
Today, 7Landies has become exactly that. The workshop has built a loyal following among Land Rover enthusiasts who value deep technical knowledge paired with genuine enthusiasm.
The success of 7Landies laid the groundwork for something even more ambitious. Although Louis had been rebuilding Defenders as a sideline, Defenders Worldwide was launched officially in 2024. This is where Louis and his team take ageing Defender 90s, 110s and 130s and transform them into bespoke machines that blend classic styling with modern engineering.
Each build begins with a donor vehicle stripped down to its bare bones. Chassis are reinforced and marine powder-coated for corrosion resistance. Engines are rebuilt and dyno-tuned for real-world performance. Suspension, braking systems and driveline components are upgraded. Interiors are reimagined with luxury craftsmanship. The result is something that looks legendary but drives with modern confidence.
And the appeal stretches beyond our shores. From the Paarden Eiland workshop, Defenders Worldwide now builds vehicles destined for roads across Africa, Europe, Australia and the USA. One Defender may end up crawling through the Swartberg Pass; another cruising through Paris or parked outside a California winery.
Part of the company’s appeal lies in its refusal to cut corners. Louis’ engineering philosophy centres on longevity and real-world usability. These aren’t fragile collector’s toys designed to spend their lives hidden beneath dust covers in climate-controlled garages. They’re built to be driven: hard and often.
South Africa has long produced exceptional engineering talent. Defenders Worldwide taps directly into that tradition: practical innovation paired with handcrafted detail.
Despite the growing international reputation, the operation retains a distinctly personal feel. Clients are involved throughout the process, from the first design sketches to final road testing. Every build reflects highly individual vehicles with character. For Louis, that attention to detail is everything.
In many ways, his businesses mirror the vehicles he loves: durable, adaptable and built with precision.
