Dam fine getaway

Little Stream Farm

Close to Melkbosstrand, there’s a pocket of tranquility where the loudest sound is a frog auditioning for the evening chorus while ducks glide by on the dam. At Little Stream Farm you can also swim, kayak or fish for grass carp or Mozambique tilapia. Your only deadlines are sunset and supper.

A few minutes’ drive delivers you to Van Riebeekstrand for surf and sand or Koeberg Nature Reserve for trekking. But many guests never make it that far because the serenity is just what the doctor ordered.

Tastefully rustic, the four-sleeper off-grid bungalow has one bedroom with a queen bed for those who dream ambitiously; the other, a double bed for economical dreamers. Two bathrooms ensure peace.

In the open-plan living area, convenience reigns: a dishwasher, washing machine and fireplace. With its generous couch, Netflix and Wi-Fi, the lounge reminds you that the world still spins.

When the afternoon light, thick as clotted cream, settles over the dam, sit on the deck to watch the aquatic theatrics of the feathered denizens. Cape shovellers, all ponderous dignity, while the daintier Cape teals skitter on the banks. Beneath the tree, a Cape moorhen sails with delicate precision. And then, the sentinels: a black-crowned night heron, hunched and inscrutable, and its taller cousin, the great blue—stoic elegance in a tableau of patience.
