From a mere six hectares of windswept coastal vines comes a Sauvignon Blanc unlike any other in South Africa. Grown in Bamboes Bay, the country’s tiniest demarcated wine ward, the 2023 Fryer’s Cove Bamboes Bay Sauvignon Blanc is a vinous expression of maritime minerality and limestone-rich Hutton soil, anchored in the wild terroir on the Atlantic edge at Doringbaai.
Once known as Hollebaksstrandfontein—an evocative Dutch name meaning “hollow bin” and “beach fountain”—the Bamboes Bay land was once prized by farmers for its freshwater spring. Today, it offers a different kind of refreshment: wines so pure they taste like the sea’s breath.
This 2023 Sav Blanc is no spritely sipper—it’s a serious, full-bodied white with taut citrus edges, a saline whisper and a core of bright acidity that unravels with air. It’s fresh, yes, but also gorgeously structured, built to evolve gracefully over five to seven years.
Pair it with the obvious—West Coast crayfish, of course—or try it with creamy goat’s cheese, smoked salmon or even roast chicken. It’s a chameleon with backbone.
And here’s a charming touch: every case is hand-packed and signed by the Fryer’s Cove team. This is certainly an old-school guarantee of pride and provenance.
