As a brilliantly balanced sport, kayaking combines a good workout with either adrenaline-fuelled thrills or a chilled-out cruise through nature. However, whatever your poison, fun should always be paramount.
To enjoy kayaking experiences, you don’t even need to break the bank buying the gear. Gravity Adventures offers two paddling excursions from Langebaan, as well as an overnight Cape Columbine expedition – all equipment included. And, if you want to do your own thing, they have kayaks and inflatable SUPs for hire at Langebaan Lagoon all year round. Cost: R150 per kayak/hr.
The Island Paddle in stable two-man sit-on-top kayaks is a two-hour guided trip. Cruise around Schaapen Island with its protected bird colony, seals and white rabbits, framed by Langebaan’s signature azure waters. There’s just no way to downplay the beauty around you. Water, juice and snacks included. Cost: R650pp for 4 – 5 people or R450pp for 6+.
Because the National Park’s beauty is not to be taken lightly, some might want more in-depth exploration. Well, the guided Explorer Paddle is right up your street. Arrive to juice and a pastry, then spend four hours on the water and break for lunch (on a deserted Robin Crusoe beach and all!). Cost: R1 200pp for 2 – 5 people & R900pp for 6+.
Then there’s the blissful Cape Columbine Expedition for those with paddle experience. Kick off at Jacobsbaai after breakfast, then paddle along for roughly 2,5 hours. A leisurely lunch is followed by about 3 hours’ cruising to Trekoskraal for an overnight camp and dinner. More of the same thrills are to be had the following day for 4 hours, docking back at Jacobsbaai for a late lunch. Cost: R2 500pp all-inclusive for 4.
