Food worth craving

Moorrees Eatery

Forget Paris: the Swartland now has its own Poilâne—and it comes with bread, scones, bagels and pizzas worth the detour.

Moorrees Eatery is the kind of place that’s earned its stripes in making food you actually want to eat voraciously. The menu flits between the familiar and the adventurous—pizzas that behave like comfort blankets, slow-smoked pulled beef with the necessary grunt, Mexican dishes that remind you that spice is a verb, plus salads and vegan options that don’t feel like penance.

But the bread. Good heavens, the bread. Carien Waring’s long-fermentation sourdough makes you reconsider every supermarket loaf you’ve ever endured. The crumb is tender, the crusts are sonorous and every slice whispers of time, patience and a very competent oven. There are big seeded monsters with crackling crusts, elegant rounds with a chew that borders on poetry and a Poilâne-style boule that could, quite frankly, out-French the French.

Around this carbohydrate altar, the gospel of gluten reigns supreme. You’ll also find bagels, croissants, cakes and scones. All of them sing.

One thing’s for sure: Moorrees Eatery passionately makes bread and food with soul. Locally milled flour, local farmers, local hands. What a perfect recipe!
