Flaunt your garden shamelessly this summer with the flashy cockscomb. Although native to Africa’s tropical regions, as an easy-to-grow flowering annual, Celosia cristata is suitable for most zones – it can even withstand drought. In warmer regions it can be grown as a perennial.

Named for its resemblance to a rooster’s comb, these vibrant ruffled flower heads command attention second to none in garden borders, containers or arranged in a vase. Bear in mind that it hits 81 cm in height. Take your pick between striking blooms of white, yellow, purple, orange, pink or red. Better yet, mix ‘em up.

For best results, position cockscomb with room to spread in sunny, sheltered spots – maybe with some afternoon summer shade. Sow the seeds directly into the soil in September after adding organic compost. Space them 30 cm apart. Gently press the seeds in and cover with a thin soil layer. Water consistently to keep the soil moist but not saturated. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

Fertilise every four to six weeks during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser. Remove weeds that may compete for nutrients and dead-head regularly. Keep an eye on aphids, spider mites, or powdery mildew and take appropriate action with organic insecticides or fungicides.

Celosia Cristata’s standout feature is its long-lasting blooms. Once mature, they can remain vibrant for weeks.
