For a slice of solitude, escape the hubbub and embrace the Cederberg mountains at Mount Ceder to sip from creeks, clamber over rock formations, float in the perennial river, sleep under the stars and negotiate with honest interlocutors, like antelope.
Nestled in the Grootrivier valley, there are walks and hikes for every preference and fitness level. Forge your own trail and cowboy-camp or make use of Mount Ceder’s guided hikes. These are glorious outings. No distractions from phones, emails or screens, sharing the camaraderie of blisters, bugs and awe.
Secret Cederberg Sundowner
Nice n easy does it on this guided walk to two rock art sites. Then a 30-minute ramble to the spectacular Rietrivier Canyon viewpoint and back for sundowners. Duration: 2,5 – 3 hours. Cost R300pp.
Secret Cederberg half-day hike
An illuminating introduction to fynbos and ancient rock art on a short wilderness walk to archetypal rock art and rock formations. It ends at the Rietrivier Canyon viewpoint, followed by a packed meal (brunch, lunch or sundowner dinner, depending on time of walk). Duration: 3 – 4 hours. Cost R500pp.
Tuinskloof rock pool nature walk
Stroll down Tuinskloof valley to a rock pool with a seasonal waterfall, followed by a comfortable but spirited trail through rugged unspoilt mountain terrain. Then walk back to Mount Ceder, climbing over boulders or follow the river back to the resort. Snack trail mixes are included and camping for one night can be arranged. Duration: 4 hours. Cost R300pp.
Junior ranger adventure
Instruction about rock art, making a bow and arrow, fishing in the pond, scavenger hunts and more. Duration: 2 hours. Cost R150pp.
Olive grove tour & olive oil tasting
Guides will take you on a tour of the working farm, olive groves and olive oil press. Learn about growing and processing Kalamata olives, plus the range of oils produced. Enjoy a tasting session and end off with a singular sundowner. Duration: 2 hours. Cost R250pp.
Secret Cederberg full day hike
This 6-hour guided hiking trail explores shallow caves, crevasses and arches, rock art and canyon viewpoints. Paired with a picnic lunch and sundowners, it’s one hell’uva special outing. Duration: 6 hours. Cost R750pp.
Secret Cederberg 3-day glamping hike
Now for something stiffer: a 3-day tailor-made trek with a two-night wilderness glamping stay in tents or caves (slackpacking and all meals included). Investigate caves and dramatic rock formations, visit multiple ancient rock art sites and various viewpoints onto Rietrivier Canyon. At night you can indulge in stargazing with an informative night sky talk. (On Friday it’s a brisk 2-hour afternoon trudge, on Saturday a full day hike, ending on Sunday with a snappy 2-hour walk.) Cost R2 500pp.
What’s more, a bespoke itinerary accommodates multi-day hikes, short walks or relaxing at the camp. Group rates can be arranged as well.
Although day-trippers are welcome to book for any of these excursions, it’s just so worth it to spend a night or two at the eternally captivating Mount Ceder. Framed by an otherworldly landscape, the self-catering houses and campsites offer both privacy and top-notch comfort.
