With so many craft beers out there, it’s easy to feel beer FOMO at times. So, if you haven’t tried it yet, the Botha family-owned Maskam Brewing Company’s beers should be on your radar.
Pumping out Blonde Ale, Amber Ale and Lager made by brewer Nick Birkby, the brewery has had seven years in the game of perfecting its beer profiles.
All fruity and citrusy with honey undertones, the semi-heavy Blonde Ale has a strong pungent character with soft, malty sweetness. Sporting a characteristic deep golden colour, it complements curries and spicy Asian dishes.
With its deep copper brown hue, the Amber Ale is a semi- to full-bodied beer with medium carbonation. It bursts with spicy, tropical fruit aromas. Pizza, fried food and smoked pork go down smoothly with this beer.
Brewed in the traditional German style, the Maskam Lager is sharp and dry with a clean, thin malt finish. Sausages, goulash, burgers and pizza make for a classic pairing.
Knock down some tasting beers either on tap or by the bottle at the brewery. Lush lawns and the play of light and shadows on the Maskam mountain set the stage for jolly times – with good fare to boot.
Open Wed–Sat 10–22h00 and Sundays until 15h00, Bruinklip Plaas, R363, Vredendal; 082 5013895.
