Vibey and with top-drawer décor, The Great Cape Trading Company’s Bloubergstrand restaurant-cum-deli is fast becoming the destination for gourmands.
To enter the restaurant, step into the beautifully decorated deli where shelves are packed to the rafters with prodigious ingredients, gourmet meats, artisan cheeses and perfect patisserie. Here, owners Sally and Joao De Oliveira are often on hand with good advice.
Throbbing with flavour, the restaurant’s breakfasts include unexpected options. The cheese-filled omelette baguette is topped with the crunchy goodness of cucumber, tomato, red onion and cilantro, lovingly embraced by soy sauce. An Italian breakfast pizzioni is capped with a fine selection of tomato sugo, torn basil leaves, mozzarella cheese, cherry tomatoes and salami slices – the best eaten in years. But don’t skip the titillating tiramisu French toast stack: slices of Amarula-dipped vanilla brioche toast topped and filled with wallops of Mascarpone cream, boisterously finished off with sweet date syrup and a light sugar dusting.
You’ll find the same bold cooking among the lunch choices. A beef curry roti has been given the long and slow treatment to produce melt-in-the-mouth shredded beef in an aromatic red curry sauce. Pleasingly dressed with lemon, garlic, parmesan and anchovies, the spaghetti al limone amalfitano demands to be slurped. And elevated glamorously, the marble cutters’ soup has a satisfyingly rich tomato base with butter croutons, basil leaves and pecorino shavings. Also worthy of attention are the rotis, rissoles, salads and gourmet sandwiches.
Indeed, you’ll enter The Great Cape as a tourist, but guaranteed, you’ll come out as a regular.
