Whether it’s the call of the sea or the thrill of the hunt, few sports are as rewarding as deep-sea fishing. Die-hard fishermen now have the luxury of full-service (this means rods, tackle and bait included) charters to some of the most fish-rich water on the West Coast.
A&M Fishing Charters’ adventure leaves at 6h15 sharp from the safety of Port Owen. From here, the 20-foot Wavebreaker powers through to the deep of St Helena Bay for six hours of some serious fishing. When the water’s calm, the depths teem with all manner of sea life: snoek, elf, garrick, white steenbras, kob, yellowtail, white stumpnose, mackerel, red grunters, as well as bronze and blue Cape bream. This then is where guests can angle their rods to catch some supper.
With deep-sea fishing, a good skipper with vast local knowledge of the waters is paramount. Which is why A&M owner Andry Barnard is your man. He uses only the best in weather information, safety gear, navigation systems and fish-finder equipment. “Safety is non-negotiable: I never go out in rough seas, or with faulty equipment,” he said.
Fishermen (and companions) are welcome to bring aboard drinks and snacks. Cap the trip by choosing which fish to take home and then have the mother of braais that evening.
Andry also runs fishing charters and cruises along the Berg river. These festive trips usually last about 2 hours.
