Ganzekraal fishing

Just a hop and a skip away, wallow in classic beachy pleasures at Ganzekraal Coastal Resort – an oft-overlooked slice of the West Coast. Whether camping, caravanning or staying in a cottage, it’s a good pick for fishing, boating adventures, lolling around the tidal pool or snoozing in a deckchair with the sea’s symphony as background.

With expansive ocean views, the lapa is the hub on the resort for braais, small parties and chumming around at the bar. Very handy too is the on-site self-catering restaurant in case you want to throw a bash or two.

Apart from a caravan and camping site smack-bang on the cliff overlooking the sea, there are 28 sea-facing, fully-equipped, four- to six-sleeper self-catering chalets. Run by the Moorreesburg municipality, it’s super-secure with entry through a 24-hour manned security gate.

Good news for the fisherfolk: fishing is tops here. In front of the rondawels at the rocky outcrops known as Jan-se-Klip, you can hook galjoen, stumpnose, kob and hotties. Further to the right is a small bay with kelp beds which hotties love. To the left of the island called Kabeljoubank, you can target white stumpnose. Preferred bait is worms, chokka and prawn. But be prepared to lose quite a few sinkers and tracers. Tight lines!
