Ahead of the game

The West Coast doesn’t exactly conjure up thoughts of game-rich experiences, so big was the surprise that Big Four game-viewing is 56 km from Melkbos at Buffelsfontein Game & Nature Reserve.

Replete with a restaurant, bush camp, chalets and cottages, Paul Loubser’s former cattle farm also is an immersive getaway destination.

Lion, buffalo, rhino and leopard, plus cheetah, giraffe, zebra, kudu, eland, oryx, blue wildebeest, mountain reedbuck and red hartebeest make good targets for your camera on the game drives. Collection for the day trip is at 7h30 and on arrival a good-sized breakfast awaits before embarking on the three-hour, fully-guided trip. Back at the ranch, enjoy a hunger-busting lunch with departure scheduled between 14h30 and 15h00. The cost is R1 800pp, while the three-hour game trip for self-drive arrivals costs R650pp – departing strictly at 9h00 and 14h00.

There also are options of a half-drive lasting 1,5 hours and for the energetic, a two- to three-hour Bike & Saddle Game Drive. The latter is part of the one-day West Coast Cycle & Safari trip at R3 350pp, which includes snacks, lunch, a guide, backup vehicle and entry fees. It kicks off at 8h00 and the difficulty level is 2/3.

In the laid-back restaurant, the usual suspects of wraps, sandwiches, bobotie and lasagne are joined by the popular game pie.
