Just a perfect day

Swap four wheels for two over a weekend to enjoy an invigorating mountain bike ride a mere 10 km from Melkbosstrand on Capaia Wine Estate, Botterberg Rd. From easy- and medium- difficulty spins beside rolling vineyards to epic circuits around Olifantskop and beyond, these splendidly isolated trails promise to thrill.

The low-level rides are an undemanding 1,5 – 6 km, the 11 km medium-level trail ascends consistently and gradually – rarely does altitude come so easily. Once perched atop Olifantskop, you’re greeted by a rewarding view of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounds. And experienced riders will build up a good sweat on the 15 km technical trail. Cost is R40pp.

Running trail options range from a no-sweat 2,5 – 4 km, as well as 8,5 – 13 km for the splendidly fit. Cost is R20pp.

Exercise done, you’re welcome to hit the shower at Olivia Deli. Fresh as a daisy again, tuck into Olivia’s sandwiches, pastries, coffee and juices. Or sit down to a more substantial meal at Mariella’s Restaurant. Here, chef Brendan du Preez outdoes himself with fusion menu options such as chicken and avocado salad; a tasting board of Patagonian calamari, pork-belly, steak and tempura-broccoli; creamy Cape Malay pork curry; and sirloin with truffled mashed potato, summer baby veg, beetroot, carrot purée and rosemary jus.

Owned by Baroness Ingrid von Essen and Count Stephan von Neipperg, the 140 ha estate’s claim to wine fame stretches all the way to Europe. So make the most of the day with a tasting at the cellar or in the restaurant over weekends. Bookings & enquiries: 021 9721103/072 7709695.
